It appears speed and icy roads are to blame for a fatal accident near Spiritwood.

Mounties say two people died after the truck they were travelling in rolled and slammed into a slough around midnight this morning.

A 29-year-old male passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while a 27-year-old woman was trapped in the wreckage.

Both were pronounced dead on scene.

One passenger did manage to survive, though.

Authorities say the man broke a window in the vehicle and managed to crawl out, suffering only minor injuries.

The crash happened on a grid road about one mile north of Shell Lake.

The woman was a resident of the Ahtahkakoop First Nation, while the man was from Shell Lake.

Autopsies have been ordered on each of the victims, and the investigation continues.
