A man who says he’s exempt from traffic laws because he’s a member of the “Indian Nation of Turtle Island” has lost his case.

In a a ruling made public last week, Justice Peter Whitmore said that Steven Agecoutay will have to pay his fines.

Agecoutay was charged with nine traffic offences in 2006 and 2007, including speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Agecoutay argued that a Saskatchewan safety court could not fine him.

He says the court was out of its jurisdiction when trying to prosecute him.

The term “Turtle Island” is sometimes used to describe North America.
