The election took three days to complete, but the Hatchet Lake First Nation finally has a new chief.

Rosalie Tsannie-Burseth was elected to the position on the third ballot — defeating Mary Denechezhe by a vote count of 225 to 187.

Fellow candidates Jerome Dzeylion, J.D. Tsannie and Joe Tsannie were dropped after the first two ballots.

Tsannie-Burseth replaces Louie Josie, who’s been the chief in Hatchet Lake for the last four years.

Josie chose not to run again after serving two terms in office.
