The Saskatoon Tribal Councl has unveiled a new program aimed at helping off-reserve kids get vaccinated.

The STC Urban Immunization Program offers transportation for children and their parents to centres for shots — as well as a chance to connect with First Nations workers in their community.

Officials with the tribal council say the primary target of the campaign will be inner city neighbourhoods, where vaccination levels are low.

A recent study found that immunization rates for STC children living in the city is lower than 50 per cent, compared to a 90 per cent rate for tribal council kids living on-reserve.

Saskatoon Tribal Chief Joe Quewezance says this will be one of the first steps in an effort to begin reversing the overall health disparity of urban band members in Saskatoon.
