Sod was finally turned yesterday on a multi-purpose recreational facility for the Battlefords and area.

The facility, which is expected to cost more than $40-million, has been talked about for the past six years.

The Battlefords Tribal Council was instrumental in two moves which enabled the project to get the green light.

A couple of weeks ago, they pledged $2.25-million toward construction of the facility. They also offered to help cover operating costs.

And last week, the City approved a deal with the tribal council to swap land for the facility.

Speakers at the site praised the partnership between BTC, the City, the Town of Battleford and various other groups.

Starting today, the site for the facility is being cleared.

Construction of the project is expected to begin next spring and be completed in a couple of years.
