Treaty Walk A Go

A walk is set to take place this Saturday from the Ahtakakoop First Nation to Prince Albert.

Brenda Peekeekoot says she and others want to raise awareness about the need for Ottawa to honour the treaties.

She says poor housing, a lack of jobsm and suicide are just some of the many problems affecting First Nations reserves.

Peekeekoot says the importance of the treaties can’t be overstated, as it was leaders like Mistawasis and Ahtakakoop who helped create the relationship between First Nations people and the queen.

She believes reserve residents would be doing a lot better if they still dealt with Her Majesty instead of Ottawa.

Peekeekoot says they’re tentatively planning to leave the reserve Saturday morning. They will head to Prince Albert, Fort Carlton and then Saskatoon.
