Trappers Out In Lower Numbers

An official with a large fur marketing group in the country says many trappers scaled back their operations this year from a year ago, including fur harvesters in Saskatchewan.

North American Fur Auctions recently held its season-ending wild fur sale, and spokesman Dave Bewick says there were a few varieties of pelts that saw big gains over the last year.

They include lynx, marten and otter pelts.

Bewick says tough weather conditions this past year likely contributed to the drop in pelts that were sent in this year.

However, Bewick admits many trappers have had a tough time justifying spending as much time on the trapline as they have in the past.
