Transwest Air’s Maintenance Operations Cleared

Transport Canada is satisfied two recent incidents in the Far North involving Transwest Air planes are not the result of a systemic problem.
On May 10th, the engine of a plane landing at the Stony Rapids airport started smoking because of problems in its compressor section — forcing passengers to leave by emergency exit once the plane landed.
During another flight from Stony Rapids to La Ronge last Wednesday, a fire warning light in the cockpit went off shortly after liftoff. The plane returned to the airport, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
Transport Canada spokesperson Kate Fletcher says the Transportation Safety Board has determined the two incidents are not connected — and that’s why there are no plans to take a closer look at Transwest Air’s maintenance operations.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada spokesman Peter Hildebrandt says the crews on both flights followed the proper procedures.
