A northern Saskatchewan air carrier has announced that it will start scheduled service to Fort McMurray in September.

Transwest Air says it will connect Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and northern Saskatchewan with Fort McMurray.

The company says it will offer service three days a week, using its Saab 340a aircraft.

The turbo-prop will be able to make the direct flight in under two hours, which company officials say will reduce current travel times to the northern Alberta oilsands capital.

The new air service is expected to help turn many northern centres into bedroom communities for Fort McMurray, since many northerners only wish to work in that city and not live there.

The flights are scheduled to begin September 12th.
