The federal government has been served with a petition from First Nations citizens who fear it may cancel post-secondary student grants in favour of loans.

Chief Gilbert Whiteduck of the Kitigan Zibi First Nation in Quebec says the document contains 23,000 signatures and was presented to a government representative last week.

He says Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl should realize many futures could be lost if the Post-Secondary Student Support Program is compromised.

Whiteduck says the Conservative government has talked at length about the importance it places on tangible results.

He believes the student support program has proven its effectiveness over the years, and the government will be contradicting itself if it cancels the program.
