Tories Prepared To Reduce Native Language Funding

The federal government is apparently planning to yank back some funding dollars for Aboriginal languages, according to the Assembly of First Nations.

The AFN says it has learned Heritage Minister Bev Oda is not planning to disperse most of the $172 million that had been set aside for Native languages by the Liberals in 2002.

Instead, she will renew the funding to the tune of $50 million over ten years.

The AFN says the decision is a breach of faith, and may result in the loss of some languages.

They are calling on Oda to reconsider.
