Tories’ Funding Of On-Reserve Shelters Questioned

A director with Indian Affairs is defending his department’s decision to award one-time funding to on-reserve women’s shelters.

This week, INAC announced it would give $6 million to 35 shelters across the country. Four of those facilities are in Saskatchewan.

Robert Eyahpaise, with INAC’s social policy wing, says the move was made to address immediate funding shortfall concerns.

However, the Assembly of First Nations is questioning the move. An AFN spokesman says long-term funding is what’s required, and more shelters are urgently needed.
