The Conservative government made several funding announcements in northern Saskatchewan today.

Two of the initiatives affect La Ronge, while two more are for Brabant Lake.

The hockey arena in the Town of La Ronge is getting an upgrade.

The federal and provincial governments are each coming through with $36,000, while the Town is providing the remaining $36,000 of the total project cost.

The upgrades will include the installation of a low-E ceiling at the Mel Hegland Uniplex, which will lower the operating costs of the facility by making it more energy efficient.

The Jim Brady Metis Local #19 is receiving just under $74,984 for its La Ronge Cross-Cultural Awareness and Physical Health Project, which the local will deliver with the assistance of the Kikinhak Friendship Centre.

Aboriginal youth will be given a chance to increase their knowledge of Metis culture and heritage, as well as improve their physical health and build valuable life skills through hands-on participation in workshops, sports events and historical tours.

The Metis local’s president, Al Rivard, says this project will also assist in the development of an Aboriginal Youth Council in the area.

Meanwhile, Ottawa is contributing $13,333 for a new cement floor at the Brabant Lake outdoor arena.

The province and the northern settlement will provide matching funds.

Local advisory committee chair Eugene McLeod says the upgrade will allow the rink to be used year-round.

Another $30,000 in federal funds has been earmarked to upgrade Brabant Lake’s campsites and boat launch.

McLeod says the project will greatly improve the area for local residents and travellers.
