A member of the Thunderchild First Nation says she is optimistic about her upcoming military mission in Iraq.

Chystal Paddy is a supply tech with the 581st Medical Company of the U.S. military.

She recently attended a homecoming of sorts with family and friends in her home community of Thunderchild.

Paddy says she recently learned she was being transferred to Iraq for active service.

She admits some family members worry for her well-being, but she believes her training and trust in her outfit will ensure her safety.

Paddy first enlisted in the U.S. forces in October of 2004.

She says the military has given her a sense of purpose, discipline and the chance to travel.

Paddy says she believes strongly in the Iraq mission and enjoys the support of her family.

She says she also doesn’t pay attention to those dissenters who protest the war.

Paddy says she will be working to supply troops with the tools they need to succeed in Iraq, as well as working with the Iraqi people.

She will depart sometime in the coming weeks.
