Thunderchild Making Do Without Chief And Council

The Thunderchild First Nation is currently without a chief and council.

An official with Indian Affairs confirms the department is carrying on business with the band’s administrative workers right now, as the band attempts to stage another election later this month.

INAC spokesman Trevor Sutter says an election held last fall has been deemed invalid by an appeal tribunal at Thunderchild — a process the department will respect because it’s outlined in the band custom election code.

Sutter says the tribunal’s decision has since been appealed by those who were elected last fall.

A new vote is set for March 26th.

Sutter adds his department is monitoring the situation closely to make sure essential services stay provided.
