The lawyer for a large number of residential school victims says over 9,000 survivors have received fast-track settlements of $8,000 each.

However, Tony Merchant says full compensation payments likely won’t be available to them until next summer.

Merchant says his office also estimates there are approximately 3,000 survivors whose claims have been rejected.

But, he believes those claims will likely be approved once the main compensation process kicks in next summer.

He also says he will be a member of the appeals board handling disputed claims.
