A Saskatoon-based firm has been awarded the contract to build the new joint-use facility in Ile-a-la-Crosse.

Graham Construction will begin building the educational and health facility immediately.

The combined hospital, medical clinic and high school is due to be ready by 2007.

The construction budget for the project will be $29 million, up from initial estimates of $19.5 million.

Government officials say the tender came in higher than originally anticipated, mainly because of the booming construction industry in the province.

However, the ministers of Health and Education say the provincial government remains committed to having the structure built.

The facility will replace St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ile-a-la-Crosse — one of the oldest hospitals in Saskatchewan.
