The Calgary Flames are confirming the national anthem will be sung in Cree before the team’s game against Vancouver this coming Saturday.

A team spokesman tells MBC that 13-year-old Akina Shirt of the Saddle Lake First Nation will be doing the singing.

It’s believed to be the first time the anthem will be sung in Cree at an NHL game.

The Calgary-Vancouver matchup will be the second game of Hockey Night In Canada’s Saturday night double-header.

The game is scheduled to start at 9:00 pm Saskatchewan time.

The Flames are promising to make a formal announcement tomorrow.
