Teen Suspect In Manslaughter Case Still In Custody

A teenage boy implicated in the death of a 23-year-old man from the Big Island Lake Cree Nation made his first court appearance yesterday.

The 16-year-old suspect has been charged with manslaughter.

He appeared in Meadow Lake Youth Court and will go before a judge again on April 4th at the Big Island Lake Cree Nation.

In the meantime, he will remain in custody.

The RCMP were called to the reserve Sunday morning, after concerned family members of Jared Leigh Kahpoonapit found him suffering from injuries sustained in a fight the evening before.

Kahpoonapit was taken to the hospital, but was pronounced dead a short while later.
