A 20-year-old man from the Big Island Lake Cree Nation has been implicated in a fatal hit-and-run in the community.

The RCMP say a 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car on a grid road on the reserve at around 2:30 Sunday morning.

Spokesman Sgt. Brad Kaeding says the vehicle left the scene before police arrived, but was later found at a local residence.

The suspect is making a court appearance in Meadow Lake today on numerous charges — including impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, failure to remain at an accident, and breach of an undertaking.
