A group of Grades 6 to 12 students from Canoe Lake Cree Nation were honoured last night at the FSIN Circle of Honour awards.

The students from Mikisiw School took charge when, about two years ago, there were two suicides within 72 hours in their community.

One of their teachers, Geraldine Rediron, says they organized what has become an annual youth conference where they heard from role models, and learned and how to handle things like grief, teen pregnancy, drugs and alcohol.

Rediron says the conferences had a big impact on the students.

They learned that there is hope, they are not alone, and they can ask for help when they need it, Rediron says.

Rediron says students were visibly moved when there were motivational speakers at the school.
