The president of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation says yesterday was a landmark day in the province, as her group signed a Memorandum of Understanding with seven First Nations.

The MOU will allow teachers on the reserves of Little Pine, Mosquito, Sweetgrass, Red Pheasant, Poundmaker, Moosomin and Lucky Man to join the federation.

STF President Heather Vermeersch says up until now, they haven’t been able to talk to teachers who work outside provincial jurisdiction.

She adds her group signed an agreement with another reserve school down south a few years ago, but nothing meaningful came out of it.

However, Vermeersch is confident yesterday’s signing in Saskatoon will have much more impact.
