Suspected ATV Thief Mistakenly Released From Jail

An arrest warrant has been issued for a northern Saskatchewan man accused of stealing two ATVs in Buffalo Narrows last week.

Here’s the kicker — the thefts alerted the RCMP to the fact that 22-year-old Christopher Herman had been let out of jail prematurely.

Herman was released from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre on July 31st after serving 30 days in prison.

The problem is he still had 18 months remaining on his sentence for — you guessed it — theft of a vehicle.

Buffalo Narrows RCMP spokesman Sgt. Ron Corner says it appears an administrative error is to blame.

Corner also says Herman is technically not unlawfully at large, because he was released.

It also means his original sentence is being reduced every day Herman remains at large.

Herman has already served four weeks in the community, so to speak.

He is not considered a danger to the public.

The ATVs have since been recovered.
