An researcher from the University of Saskatchewan has released a study on housing issues facing off-reserve Aboriginal people.

The report by Ryan Walker states that a growing number of Aboriginal people in urban centres are living in crowded homes in poor repair.

The report finds that while Aboriginal housing organizations are doing their part, governments need to put in place a social housing program to address the crisis.

Walker says that while the provincial government has done some good work, their needs to be clearer goals and a long-term plan.

He also notes that Ottawa’s recent re-entry into low-cost housing is unsatisfactory, lacks necessary funding, clear goals, and a long-term commitment.
