Organizers of this year’s Back To Batoche Days say thousands of people showed up to take in all the traditional Metis festivities this past weekend — despite the absence of chuckwagon and rodeo events.

Those events are usually part of the festivities, but were left out this year because the organizing committee took over just after the recent Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election.

Spokesman Bob McLeod says the exact numbers are not in just yet, but notes there were more participants this year compared to 2006.

He says everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend and preparations are already underway for next year’s event.

McLeod says the big events that continue to draw large crowds during the annual Metis celebrations include the fiddling and jigging competitions.
