Jim Prentice is out as Minister of Indian Affairs and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians.
He has been replaced by former Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl in a major cabinet shuffle announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper earlier today.
Prentice is now the new Industry Minister.
Strahl and Prentice were in their former posts since shortly after the Conservatives took power early last year.
During Prentice’s time at Indian Affairs, the Conservatives announced plans to speed up the resolution of land claims, and also finalized the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.
However, the Tories have also been widely criticized for not implementing the $5.1-billion Kelowna Accord signed by the previous Liberal government, and for opposing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Strahl is perhaps best known for championing the Tories’ drive to end the Canadian Wheat Board’s monopoly on barley sales.
