Saskatchewan Northern Affairs has a new deputy minister.

Larry Steeves was appointed to the position yesterday, after spending the last year-and-a-half acting as an associate deputy minister in the departments of Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs.

Steeves’ new post has been filled on an interim basis for the last several months by Northern Affairs’ assistant deputy minister, Glenn McKenzie.

McKenzie took over after former deputy minister Alan Parkinson was transferred to another department.

Like Parkinson, Steeves will be based in Regina.

Northern leaders have often said they prefer the position to be based in La Ronge, but Northern Affairs minister Buckley Belanger is sticking with his belief that the deputy minister should be in the provincial capital.

Steeves officially takes on his new position tomorrow.
