A 14-year-old boy charged in connection to the accidental shooting death of 15-year-old Johnny Abel Venne near La Ronge last summer has pleaded guilty to attempting to obstruct justice.

He has been sentenced to six months of probation, and must also apologize to the victim’s family.

Venne’s body was found floating on the Montreal River on the Bigstone reserve last July.

According to a statement of facts agreed to by the Crown and defence, the boys were playing in some bushes with a shotgun, when it accidentally went off and struck Venne in the chest.

The youths carried him to the vicinity of two houses, but he died en route.

His body was then hidden in the river.

Crown prosecutor Bob Lane says the focus will now shift to the 15-year-old charged with manslaughter.

A trial date will be set at an upcoming pre-trial conference.
