Two members of the Saskatoon Public School Division were honoured with First Nations spirit names this morning in Saskatoon.
Dr. Jim Jutras and Cort Dogniez were recognized for their work of including Aboriginal culture in the school division, as well as working at improving learning outcomes for Aboriginal students.
Dogniez is the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Education Coordinator.
He was given the spirit name “mahto wombli”, which means “eagle bear”.
Shirley Isbister of CUMFI held back tears as she told the crowd how proud she was of Dogniez.
Jutras is the Director of Education for the school division.
He was given the name “cante waste itoncha”, which means “good-hearted leader”.
Both men were also given star blankets and eagle feathers.
