Saskatchewan’s Metis Relations minister says it’s not an option right now for the province to try funding a new Metis organization.
Maynard Sonntag met Monday in Saskatoon with what he calls respected members of the Metis community about the ongoing battle over this year’s disputed Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election.
Sonntag says he wanted to find out what role the province should play in trying to resolve the impasse.
He says he’s been told the province should involve itself, but for now, that role should be limited to broad-based, public consultations.
Sonntag also says giving a rival Metis group the money that’s normally earmarked for the MNS is a non-starter.
Sonntag says, to his knowledge, none of the people present for Monday’s meeting have any affiliation with the MNS executive or those who oppose them.
