The minister for First Nations and Metis Relations says he still wants to work things out with the leadership at the Metis Mation of Saskatchewan.

However, Maynard Sonntag says they won’t be receiving any money until both the province and Ottawa see an election process that is fair and accountable to other Metis in the province.

Earlier this week, disputed MNS president Dwayne Roth rejected the government’s offer to fund a new election, arguing the province wanted too much control.

Sonntag insists that isn’t the case.

Sonntag also says he won’t try to have Roth replaced, as he doesn’t have the legal means to make that happen.

As well, Sonntag says he is not entertaining thoughts of forging ahead with a new Metis organization.

He says the bottom line is that the government wants some type of mechanism that ensures MNS elections are fair.
