The chief of the Shoal Lake Cree Nation says fellow Aboriginal leaders shouldn’t feel like they have to back down in the face of threats by Canada’s Indian Affairs minister.
Marcel Head says Jim Prentice is trying to sway band leaders into not demonstrating on a national day of protest on June 29th by threatening to withold government funds from First Nations that participate.
The chief says it seems the tactic has already changed the minds of some Native leaders in the western provinces who were thinking of holding demonstrations.
Head says Saskatchewan chiefs need to show their resolve and express their frustration with government inaction on land claims.
He and other members of the Prince Albert Grand Council are discussing this issue and others at a special meeting today.
