The provincial government says it won’t be clawing back social-assistance benefits from families of children with disabilities.

Social services minister Donna Harpauer says a new exemption will give families the chance to sock away money for their children and not get penalized for doing so.

Last year the federal government introduced its registered disability savings plan to help people with disabilities save for their long-term financial security.

Harpauer says the new exemption will give families of

children with disabilities more flexibility.

Harpauer says families who take advantage of Ottawa’s registered savings plan will also be eligible for matching grants and bonds.

The federal plan doesn’t officially begin until December
