Swirling winds and thick smoke from fires in the Far North led to the evacuation of some Black Lake residents yesterday.

Saskatchewan Environment spokeswoman Jeanette Krayetski says some large blazes in the Northwest Territories and smaller ones in the Athabasca region caused the situation.

However, she stresses that the community itself was never in any danger from the flames.

Some residents suffering from asthma and other chronic conditions were flown out of the community as a precautionary measure.
