Smelter Closure To Result In Hundreds Of Lost Jobs

The copper smelter in Flin Flon is set to close, affecting employment in the neighbouring town of Creighton.

A media release from HudBay Minerals, which owns the smelter, says the move will take place before July 1, 2010.

For years, the mill has served as a source of employment for nearby Creighton, which is just across the border in Saskatchewan.

Officials with HudBay Minerals say regulatory changes and the age of the building contributed to the decision.

A total of 225 jobs will be lost.
