An award-winning affordable housing project for single parents was officially opened today in La Loche.

The $3.8-million Dene Empowerment Centre provides transitional housing for low-income single-parent families.

It’s also designed to help them build independence so they can eventually make the move to non-supportive housing.

The centre includes 7 apartments, 16 two-bedroom suites in 4 four-plexes and 4 three-bedroom units in 2 duplexes. It also has a classroom, a meeting room, office space, and a daycare and multi-purpose area.

La Loche mayor Georgina Jolibois says the centre is more than a building — it provides a sense of security and stability for single mothers and their children.

Last year, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation announced the project was the 2006 winner of the CMHC’s “Best Practices In Affordable Housing” award.
