The File Hills First Nations Police Service now has its first-ever sergeant on staff.
A member of the Blood Reserve from southern Alberta, Sergeant Kurt Healy, joins the chief of police and five constables who provide service to five First Nations in the southern part of the province.
Police Chief Ralph Martin says, like other police forces, his can always use more officers on staff.
Martin says Healy will be working a lot with the public.
Martin adds there is a role for his police service to work with community wellness programs, and Healy will be a liaison for such projects.
Martin also says having an officer working closely with the communities can only help the relationship the force has with them.
Last fall, there were media reports of a 15-year-old who allegedly suffered a broken arm while in custody, as well as a mother who received a bag of bloody clothes belonging to her dead daughter.
Martin says those incidents are still under investigation and when they are fully investigated, they will be dealt with properly.
