A northern mine rescue team coordinator admits his group was thinking about a fatal gold mine accident during a competition in Saskatoon this past weekend.

Randy Seright of Buffalo Narrows oversees the mine rescue team from Cameco’s McArthur River uranium mine.

Seright says competing the day after the body of a miner was found at the Seabee mine put the event into perspective.

Seright’s team won the underground proficiency category this past weekend.

It was his team’s first trip back to the podium since a string of wins from 2000 to 2002. They were also the runners-up in the underground practical skills competition.

AREVA’s team from McClean Lake won the surface proficiency competition.
