Canada’s Indian Affairs minister says his government is not going to solve the problems facing Aboriginal Canadians.

Scott says while the government has begun a new relationship with Aboriginal people, it’s role will be to provide Aboriginal communities with the capacity to address their challenges themselves.

Scott freely admits the government has an obligation to assist in changing that, and one area where he would like to see change is in the level of expertise provided to Aboriginal leaders.

He says there’s no reason why Native leaders can’t have access to the same level of specialists that he gets advice from.

Scott maintains it’s critically important to the country to close the gap between Native and non-Native people and that the current situation is unacceptable.
