A renowned scientist from Lincoln, Nebraska continues to be fascinated with the Cumberland House marsh lands.

Dr. Norman Smith and several colleagues from Europe and South America have been studying the Saskatchewan River delta for the last 17 years.

Smith says eight major river diversions have taken place in that delta over the last several thousand years, and that’s why the Cumberland House area is an ideal place to research river channel formation and the impact it has on the surrounding ecosystem.

He says his research will have ramifications for local residents, particularly traditional land users.

Smith is also studying the impact of dams on the Saskatchewan River delta.
