A Saskatchewan First Nation has decided to make a Saskatchewan Party MLA an honourary elder.

First Nations and Metis Relations critic June Draude was given the title during a ceremony on the reserve yesterday.

It is the highest honour the First Nation can bestow on a non-band member.

Band councillor Donna Poorman says Draude was one of about a half-dozen people to receive the designation.

Poorman says it’s awarded to non-residents who are making a difference on the reserve.

She says Draude has shown band officials where to apply for grants and other funding, and has also helped mediate some internal difficulties.
