Saskatchewan Metis Restless Over Hunting Rights

The current president of Saskatchewan’s Metis Nation says he wants the province to address the issue of Metis hunting rights as soon as possible.

Dwayne Roth says the Calvert government stands to gain nothing by delaying the issue.

Although Roth says the premier has told him he supports the cause, little has happened to this point.

Roth hopes to meet with Environment minister David Forbes in the next few weeks.

Roth acknowledges the timing of his call isn’t exactly ideal as the legitimacy of his presidency is currently under appeal. However, he says the Metis can’t afford to wait any longer and possibly jeopardize the fall hunting season.

Roth adds Metis in Alberta and Ontario seem to be further ahead in negotiations with their governments than Saskatchewan Metis.

He hopes to hear something within the next two weeks.
