Family and friends of a little boy who is missing and presumed drowned in Sandy Bay are asking northerners to pray.

The four-year-old was swept into the Churchill River early Tuesday while playing alongside the river with two other youngsters.

According to the RCMP, it looks like the boy either fell into the open water or fell through some thin ice.

The RCMP’s underwater recovery team arrived in the northern community last night and is starting its work today.

For the past couple of days, community members have been using boats and fish nets in the recovery effort.

Friends of the family are asking people to observe a moment of silence and pray that the RCMP divers will be successful, so that the family will be able to have some sort of closure over this tragedy.

Myrna Bighetty, a friend of the boy’s mother, says the community is rallying behind the family and doing what they can in the search effort.

There are reports some local men risked their lives on the ice shortly after the boy went into the river.
