A group of weather observers from Sandy Bay will be given special recognition today by Environment Canada.

The employees at SaskPower’s Island Falls Hydro Dam will be given a plaque and other gifts for recording detailed weather information for the past 75 years.

Environment Canada spokesman Bob Cormier says, in many cases, the volunteer duties have become a family tradition that’s been passed down from generation to generation.

Cormier says the data his group receives from remote locations is extremely useful for issuing forecasts and studying climate trends.

Cormier says volunteers in other northern centres have been recognized before, but never for the length of service that’s been seen in Sandy Bay.
