Commercial fishers in the North will tell you they’ve had a rough winter — now we have an idea of how bad it has been.
The Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation recently released its third quarter report.
It says unusual winter weather conditions resulted in significantly lower deliveries and initial payments to fishers from November to January.
In Saskatchewan, initial payments during that period were down 41 per cent compared to last year.
That was mainly due to a mild November, which caused production to drop by almost 44 per cent.
Whitefish deliveries were affected most — they were down 49 per cent from last year.
The FFMC also says winter fisheries suffered from restrictions on mullet purchases.
