An RCMP officer stationed in Deschambault Lake has been killed in a single-vehicle rollover.

The Mounties say 40-year-old Joe Elias was off-duty at the time of the crash, which took place on the Hanson Lake Road at around 9:30 last night.

Elias was apparently heading to his home in Humboldt in his vehicle when he lost control on Kilometre 150 and rolled into the ditch – coming to rest upside down in the water.

The RCMP say the vehicle was discovered by passing motorists, but they don’t know how long the vehicle was in the water.

Elias had been with the force for seven years. He was married and had a nine-year-old son.

The RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit is assisting the Pelican Narrows detachment in its investigation.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

A mechanical inspection is planned for the vehicle.
