Residents Try To Stem Flow Of Liquor Into Reserve

Citizens of Canoe Narrows have set up a checkstop on the highway into the reserve to search vehicles for liquor and drugs.

The blockade began late Thursday afternoon, and has the blessing of the RCMP.

Band councillor Tom Iron says the Canoe Lake First Nation is supposed to be a dry reserve.

He says residents are fed up with the drug and alcohol problem in the community.

According to Iron, a recent alcohol-related accident which claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl on the reserve was the final straw.

The checkstop will be in place until Sunday, but Iron says there be more checks carried out in future weeks.
