Residential School Debate On Hill Continues

The federal government is being asked to repatriate the remains of Aboriginal children who died in residential schools.

The call is being made by northern Saskatchewan Liberal MP Gary Merasty.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that as many as half the children who attended the early years of the church-run schools died of tuberculosis.

Merasty is glad Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice has promised to look into the situation.

However, Merasty can’t see why Prentice is still adamantly refusing to apologize to the victims.

Prentice has said the issue is not in the same category as others where the government has apologized.
