Residential School Deal Poised To Enter New Stage

Residential school survivors could see their cheques as early as November, according to a Regina-based lawyer.

Evatt Merchant of Merchant Law Group says today’s deadline for former students to opt-out of the agreement is not expected to pose a problem for the deal.

Under the terms of the compensation settlement, if 5,000 of the estimated 80,000 survivors vote to opt out of the agreement, it could be scuttled.

However, Merchant says that will definitely not happen.

Merchant says the approval rating for the deal is about 98 to 99 per cent.
