The Pelican Narrows reserve has implemented a new bylaw regarding stray dogs following the death of a child in another northeast Saskatchewan community.

Recently, a small child was mauled to death by stray dogs on the Cumberland House First Nation.

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation band councillor Francis Highway says that attack has prompted his community to enforce a “dog shooting” bylaw on the reserve.

Highway says his community is plagued by stray dogs.

He notes local leaders have received many calls from concerned band members regarding the aggressiveness of strays, including biting incidents.

The bylaw will take effect immediately.
